Varicose vein causes
Varicose veins are unsightly and patients have them removed to improve the appearance of their legs as well as the health of their overall veinous systems. Naturally, we get asked what causes varicose veins when patients come in to talk about them. That is what we will address in this quick post!
Varicose veins are a common vein issue affecting millions of people in the United States. For many, it’s a cosmetic issue, requiring fixing so that they can continue showing off their legs or just showing them without feeling self-conscious about it. In other cases, varicose veins cause swelling and pain, needing to be remedied for medical reasons. If they are not taken care of quickly, they can cause issues like blood clots over time.
What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins appear as a bluish-purple, cord of vein that bulges from under the skin. This is not to be confused with spider veins, which have a similar color but are under the skin and usually are not a medical issue. Varicose veins and spider veins are the most treated types of vein issues.
In a future post, we will go through in-depth what the difference is between the two vein types!
What causes varicose vein issues?
To put it simply, varicose veins are the end result of an unhealthy venous system. Arteries and veins are responsible for carrying blood to and from the heart to the various extremities of the body, keeping it nourished, and moving in a healthy way. Sometimes, vein valves that stop blood from flowing the wrong way become damaged. This will cause blood to become stopped and pool in the vein. When this buildup causes the enlargement of the vein, it breaks the surface and becomes what we know as a varicose vein.
